What's in a fair HVAC quote: line items to expect
A complete quote usually lists
- Equipment with model numbers (outdoor unit, indoor coil or air handler, furnace if any)
- Capacity and efficiency ratings, ideally with an AHRI certificate number
- Refrigerant line set: new or reused, and flush if reused
- Pad, disconnect, electrical, and condensate handling
- Thermostat (included or reused)
- Permit, inspection, startup and commissioning
- Removal and disposal of old equipment
- Labor warranty term and what it covers
- Price, deposit, and the payment schedule
Red flags
- One lump-sum price with no model numbers
- "Today only" pricing pressure
- No permit, or the homeowner is asked to pull it
- Sizing by square-foot rule of thumb only, with no measurements taken
- Large deposit before equipment is ordered
For published national price ranges by system, see our cost guides for central AC, heat pumps and furnaces.
