Privacy

The short version: we collect as little as we can, we don't sell or share your data, and we don't use ad trackers or analytics cookies. Last updated October 20, 2026.

Quotes you submit

When you rate a quote we save what you type into the form: ZIP code, city, state, system type, total price, size, efficiency, fuel, brand, what's included, and whether it was a quote or a job you paid for. We don't ask for your name, street address, phone, email or the contractor's name.

We use these to build price ranges. Every quote is reviewed before it counts. Approved quotes can appear on our cost pages as anonymous rows (date, city, state, size, efficiency, brand and price, not your ZIP) and in ranges and medians.

Photo and PDF uploads

If you use "Take a photo" or "Upload photo or PDF", the file is read in your browser, on your device. It is never uploaded to us or stored. To do this, your browser downloads free text-recognition software (Tesseract.js and PDF.js, with its language data) from the jsDelivr CDN, which, like any website you load something from, sees your IP address.

Only the recognized text is sent to our server, once, so we can pick out fields like price and size to pre-fill the form. We don't store or log that text. Nothing is saved until you review the form and press the button yourself.

Your report link

After you submit, you get a report at a link with a long random code (for example /report/3f9a…). There are no accounts. Anyone who has the link can open that report and see what you entered (system, price, size, brand, what's included, city and state). Your ZIP isn't shown on it. If you share the link, the preview shows only the system, grade and price range. Share it only with people you want to see it. Report pages are hidden from search engines.

Feedback reports

If you send feedback we save what you write, the page it's about, your browser and device type, screen size, the version of our site, and (if one happened) the last error message our site's code hit on your device. If you tick the box to be contacted, we also save the email you give us. A copy of each report may be emailed to our own inbox so we see it quickly.

We never store your IP address. For spam and rate limiting we keep a short salted hash of it that changes every day, so reports can't be linked across days or traced back to an address.

Newsletter

If you sign up for local price updates we save your email address, the state you pick (optional), the page you signed up on, a campaign tag if the link you followed had one (utm_source), the time, and the exact consent wording you saw. Spam protection uses the same daily-rotating IP hash as feedback, never your raw IP.

We use your email only to send those updates, about once a month. Every email will include a one-click unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately. We keep an unsubscribed address marked as unsubscribed so it isn't emailed again. If you want it deleted entirely, ask us (see contact below). Signing up again with the same email re-subscribes you.

Cookies and tracking

We don't set cookies and we don't use analytics, advertising or social media trackers. Your browser keeps two small things in session storage on your own device: a campaign tag from the link you arrived on (sent only if you sign up) and the last error our site's code hit (pre-filled into the feedback form only if you open it). Both are gone when you close the tab.

Who processes data for us

The site is hosted on Vercel, which handles every web request (including your IP address) to deliver the site and keeps short-lived request logs. Our database is hosted by Supabase in the US. It isn't publicly readable: only our server and the people who run this site can access it. If you use the photo/PDF reader, your browser loads code from jsDelivr. We don't sell, rent or share your data with anyone else, including contractors.

How long we keep things

Approved quotes stay in our dataset because that's what makes the price ranges work. Quotes we reject, feedback and newsletter records are kept until we delete them. We don't have automatic deletion yet, so if you'd like something removed, ask us and we'll delete it. Request logs at our host expire on the host's own schedule.

Contact and requests

To ask a question, or to have your data corrected or deleted, use our feedback page. Choose "Other", describe what you want, and tick the contact box with your email if you'd like a reply. For a report you submitted, include the report link so we can find it.

If we change this page, we'll update the date at the top.
